The same goes for choosing gloves—it’s essential to select a product that suits your weight class. Gloves are characterized by their "oz," a type of "weight." All combat sports involve physical activities, where the safety of all participants is of utmost importance. Find out now which oz fits your specific weight class.
What boxing glove ounces (oz) are available?
Typical sizes for boxing gloves are 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 oz. The 8 and 10 oz models are commonly used in competitions; however, they are not recommended for regular sparring training. In contrast, 12, 14, and 16 oz gloves are generally intended for training. Below is a brief overview of each size.
12, 14, and 16 ounces (oz):
12 oz
12 oz boxing gloves have thinner padding and are generally not recommended for sparring unless they are for children. These 12 oz gloves are commonly used by teenagers and adults for heavy bag training. If you weigh less than 50 kg (110 lbs), you can also use 12 oz gloves.
14 oz
If you weigh 50 kilograms (110 pounds) or more, gloves weighing 14 to 16 oz are recommended. Generally, it is said that boxers weighing up to 86 kilograms (190 pounds) can use 14 oz gloves. However, based on personal experience, the punching power of athletes differs from that of occasional sports participants. Therefore, we recommend that athletes weighing up to 75 kilograms use 14 oz boxing gloves. If you are often told that you have powerful punches, it is also advisable, for safety reasons, to choose 16 oz boxing gloves.
16 oz
16 oz gloves are the recommended size for sparring. It is generally advised to choose 16 oz gloves if you weigh 86 kg (190 pounds) or more. If you or your opponent are athletes, it is recommended to use 16 oz gloves starting at a weight of 75 kg.
